Friend Lists
Organizing Your Friends
You can use lists to organize your friends on Facebook. Using a list, you can post an update for specific people, like your coworkers or friends who live near you. You can also see updates from specific groups of people (example: close friends, family).
You can add or remove friends from these lists at any time. People won’t be notified when you add them to these lists.

Your friend lists on Facebook
To help you get started, you have friend lists for:
  • Close Friends: Friends you may want to share exclusively with.
  • Acquaintances: People you might want to share less with. You can choose to exclude these people when you post something, by choosing Friends except Acquaintances in the audience selector.
  • Restricted: This list is for people you’ve added as a friend but just don’t want to share with, like your boss. When you add someone to your Restricted list, they will only be able to see your Public content or posts of yours that you tag them in.
You can also create custom lists to organize friends as you like. You choose who goes into these lists and what (if any) privacy restrictions apply. Note that your friends won’t get notified when you add them to custom lists.

To see your friend lists:
  1. From your News Feed, go to the Explore section on the left and click Friend Lists. If you don't see it, click See More...
  2. Click to open a list. You can also click + Create List to create a new one.

Putting someone on the Restricted list means that you’re still friends, but that you only share your posts with them when you choose Public as the audience, or when you tag them in the post.
For example, if you're friends with your boss and you put them on your Restricted list, then post a photo and choose Friends as the audience, you aren’t sharing that photo with your boss, or anyone else on your Restricted list. If your boss goes to your profile, they won't be able to see anything you haven't tagged them in or shared as Public.
However, if you add a photo and tag your boss in that photo, or chose Public as the audience, they’ll be able to see it.
To add someone to your Restricted list:
  1. Go to their Profile
  2. Hover over Friends at the top of their profile
  3. Click Add to another list
  4. Click Restricted
To see who is on your Restricted list:
  1. Click Friend Lists under Explore on the left side of your News Feed
  2. Click Restricted
To remove someone from the list, click Manage List in the top right, then click Edit List. Click on a friend's profile picture to remove them from your Restricted list.
Learn more about how to choose who sees the stuff you share.

Smart lists use the information you’ve added to the Education and Work and Current City sections of your profile. For example, if you list San Francisco as your current city, you’ll have a list with all of your friends who also list San Francisco as their current city. Smart lists update for you based on what your friends put on their profiles. You can also edit smart lists.
