Create and Share Your Story

When you create a story on Facebook, you can share photos, videos and posts that will only be visible for 24 hours. You can revisit stories you've shared in your story archive.

Getting Started
These are instructions for your personal story on Facebook. Learn how to share to your Page story.
When you share a photo or video to your story, it will be available to your selected audience for 24 hours. You can revisit your stories in your story archive.
To share to your story:
  1. Go to the Stories section at the top of your News Feed.
  2. Click + Add to Story.
  3. Type an update, or click Photo/Video to add a photo or video from your computer.
  4. Next to Your Story, you can click the audience selector (example: Public or Friends) to choose who can see your story.
  5. Click Post.
When you add a photo or video to your Facebook story, it can be seen across both Facebook and Messenger. You can always control who can see your story.

To share a News Feed post to your story, log into the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
You can share posts you see in your News Feed to your story, depending on the privacy settings of the original post.
To share a News Feed post to your story:
  1. Open the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
  2. Below a post in your News Feed, tap Share.
  3. Select + Share to Your Story.
  4. The post will appear on your story. You can tap to change the style, tap and hold to move it, or use two fingers to rotate it or change the size.
  5. To add more information, tap Aa to add text, to add a sticker, or to draw something.
  6. Tap Next. Select your audience, then tap Share Now.
When you share the post to your story, your friends can tap it to see the original post.
Note: If the original post is deleted, the post will also be removed from your story and your story archive.

To share an event to your story, log into the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
When you share an event to your story on Facebook, your friends can tap to see event details, and can respond (example: Interested or Going) directly from your story.
To share an event to your story:
  1. Open the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
  2. Tap then tap Events and select the event you'd like to share. Only upcoming public events can be shared.
  3. Below the cover photo, tap Share.
  4. Select Share to Your Story.
  5. The event will appear as a sticker on your story. You can tap and hold the sticker to move it, or use two fingers to rotate the sticker or change the size.
  6. To add more information, you can tap Aa to add text, to add a sticker, or to draw something.
  7. Tap Next. Select your audience, then tap Share Now.
When you view your story, you can see a list of your friends who responded to the event. Tap Message to start a new group message thread with these friends about the event.

To delete a photo or video you've added to your story on Facebook:
  1. Go to the Stories section at the top of your News Feed.
  2. Click Your Story.
  3. Click to find the photo or video you want to delete.
  4. Click in the top right.
  5. Click Delete Photo or Delete Video.
Keep in mind that when you delete a photo or video from your story on Facebook, it will also be deleted from Messenger. Any changes you make to your story will update across both apps.
If you see someone else's story that you don't want to see, you can mute their story so it doesn't show up in your Stories section.

Creative Tools
To add music to your story, log into the Facebook app for iOS or Android. Adding music to your story isn't available for everyone at this time.
When you share a photo or video to your story on Facebook, you may be able to add a clip of a song that will play during your story.

To add music to your story:
  1. Open the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
  2. Tap + Add to Story at the top of your News Feed.
  3. At the top of the screen, scroll to the right and tap Music.
  4. Find a song. You can tap Search music to find a specific song, or tap a genre that you like. To preview a song before you add it to your story, tap . Tap the song name to select it.
  5. Drag the slider left or right to select a clip from the song, then tap Done.
  6. The song will appear on your story. You can tap to change the style, tap and hold to move it, or use two fingers to rotate it or change the size. To remove the song, drag it to at the bottom of the screen.
  7. Tap the circle at the top of the screen (example: ) to change the background or add a photo or video from your camera roll.
  8. Tap Share to Story.
Note: At this time, music can't be added to text stories.

To choose music before you record a video:
  1. Open the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
  2. Tap + Add to Story at the top of your News Feed.
  3. Tap then tap or MUSIC in the bottom right.
  4. Tap to select a song.
  5. Drag the slider left or right to select a clip from the song.
  6. Tap or Start to record your video.
  7. Tap to end your recording. The song clip will appear on your story.
  8. Tap Share to Story.

To add a sticker to your story, log into the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
When you share a photo or video to your story on Facebook, you can add music, polls, locations, feelings, GIFs and other information to your story using stickers.
To add a sticker to your story:
  1. Open the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
  2. Tap + Add to Story at the top of your News Feed.
  3. Add your photo or video. Tap a story type at the top (example: Selfie, Boomerang), select a photo or video from your camera roll, or tap to take a new photo or video.
  4. Tap in the top right, then select a sticker.
  5. To edit most stickers, you can tap to change the style, tap and hold to move it, or use two fingers to rotate it or change the size. To remove a sticker, drag it to at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Tap Share to Story.
Note: Stickers can't be added to text stories.
If you're not seeing certain stickers you'd like to use (example: music or polls), make sure your app is updated to the latest version by visiting the App Store or Google Play Store.

To add a poll to your story, log into the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
When you add a poll to your story on Facebook, you can ask a question, customize the answers and let people vote for their favorite option.
To add a poll to your story:
  1. Open Facebook on an iOS or Android device.
  2. At the top of your News Feed, tap + Add to Story.
  3. Add your photo or video. You can tap a story type at the top (example: Boomerang) or select a photo or video from your camera roll. Tap Camera to take a new photo or video.
  4. Tap in the top right, then tap POLL.
  5. Type your question, then tap Yes or No to customize the answers.
  6. Tap Done in the top right.
  7. To change the audience for your story, you can tap Privacy in the bottom left.
  8. Tap Share to Story.

Poll Results
When you share your poll, people can respond by tapping an option you've provided. When someone selects an answer, they can see the current results of your poll.
When you view your story and swipe up, you can see how many votes each option received and how each person voted.

To add text to your story, log into the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
To add text to a photo or video in your story on Facebook:
  1. Open the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
  2. At the top of your News Feed, tap + Add to Story.
  3. Add your photo or video. You can tap the bottom left to choose a photo or video from your camera roll, or tap the bottom right to take a new photo or video using the camera.
  4. Tap Aa in the top right, then add your text. You can also:
    • Tap the font name in the bottom right (example: Headline, Classic, Fancy) see different fonts.
    • Tap the colored circle on the left to change your text color.
    • Tap to change your text alignment.
    • Tap to add a solid or transparent background to your text. Tap again to remove it.
  5. Tap Done in the top right.
  6. After you add your text, you can tap and hold to move it, or use two fingers to rotate it or change the size. To remove your text, drag it to at the bottom of the screen.
  7. Tap Share to Story.

To add a location to your story, log into the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
When you share a photo or video to your story on Facebook, you can add your location to tell people you're at a specific place, like a museum or a restaurant.
To add a location to your story:
  1. Open the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
  2. Tap in the top left of your screen.
  3. Tap to take a new photo or video, or tap Camera Roll to add a photo or video from your phone.
  4. Tap in the top right, then tap LOCATION.
  5. Search for the place you'd like to tag, then select your location.
  6. The location will appear on your story. You can tap to change the style, tap and hold to move it, or use two fingers to rotate it or change the size.
  7. Tap Next.
  8. Select your audience, then tap Share Now.

Settings and Privacy
Anything you add to your story will appear on Facebook and Messenger, and will be shared with the same audience across both apps.
You can always control who you share your story with, and you can change these settings anytime.
To change your story privacy settings:
  1. Add a photo or video to share to your story.
  2. Tap Privacy in the bottom left, then select your audience:
    • Public: Your Facebook friends, followers and people you've chatted with on Messenger will see your stories. Anyone who follows you can see your story, but only people you're friends with can reply.
    • Friends and connections: Your Facebook friends and Messenger connections will see your stories.
    • Friends: Only your Facebook friends will see your story on Facebook and the Messenger app. Your Messenger connections will not see your story.
    • Custom: You can select specific people who will be able to see your stories.

To hide your story from specific people:
  1. Open the Facebook app for iOS or Android.
  2. Add a photo or video to share to your story.
  3. Tap Privacy in the bottom left.
  4. Below Who can see your story? tap to select Friends and connections or Friends.
  5. Tap Hide Story From.
  6. Tap to select the people you'd like to hide your story from, then tap Done.
If you've placed someone on your Restricted list, they won't be able to see your story.
Note: Any changes you make to your story privacy settings will apply to any photos and videos currently in your story in addition to those you add going forward. You can change these settings anytime.

If someone has seen your story, will appear in the bottom left. Open your story, then tap to see who has viewed your story.
When looking at the list of your story viewers:
  • Your Facebook friends who have viewed your story will be listed first.
  • If your privacy settings allow Messenger connections, the names of your connections will show up below your list of Facebook friends.
  • If your story privacy is set to Public, you'll be able to see the number of followers who have viewed your story, but not specific follower names. Learn more about who can see your story.

Your Story Archive
Stories you create and share on Facebook are only available to your selected audience for 24 hours, but after that they can be saved in your story archive.
When your story archive is turned on, your photos and videos will automatically be archived after they disappear from your story. Only you can see your story archive. You can always turn your archive on or off.
To find your story archive:
  1. From your News Feed, click your name in the top left to go to your profile.
  2. Click Archive.
Note: If you delete a photo or video from your story before it disappears, it won't be saved to your archive.

  1. From your News Feed, click your name in the top left to go to your profile.
  2. Click Archive.

  4. Click Turn On Story Archive or Turn Off Story Archive.
